Here is a Great Blue Heron couple on Saddlebag island, one of their rookeries in the San Juan Archipelago. I’ve spent many years watching and admiring herons. They’re so gangly yet so graceful, and so awkwardly loud! It was such a treat to visit the island many of them call home, see their nests up in the trees and watch them interact for hours at a time from the boat cockpit or rowing ashore for a walk along the island paths. We visited in late summer - too late to watch their February courtships, but by July there were still some “empty-nesters” in the treetops!

SUNSTAR CLIFF

This original mixed media artwork on heavy watercolor paper showcases a sunstar in a tidepool at the base of a sea cliff. Inspired by an afternoon I spent with this creature as the tide crept in, watching it slowly move and feel it’s surroundings with the small sticky antenna on it’s legs.

This original mixed media artwork on heavy watercolor paper depicts the life cycles of pinto abalone and one of its favorite foods - bull kelp. The Puget Sound Restoration Fund are working to restore populations of both in several Salish Sea locations.

This was a dream project for sure. It was an absolute joy to meet the scientists, see the hatchery operation and have their expertise just an email away as I worked on sketches and this final piece.

This original mixed media artwork on heavy watercolor paper showcases moon jellyfish and a fried egg jellyfish in the midst of the Salish Sea still waters at dusk. Inspired by one of my many kayak explorations in the Discovery Islands Group.

Between Marina and Cortes islands in the fall, there are evenings where the slack water runs deep and clear. I float along the water top, looking down at the plethora of jellies gliding below. Sometimes there are silver flashes among them or below: groups of fish swimming past. The sun dips below the horizon, coloring the sky behind the treeline. The sun’s bright colors competing with the deep colors of the coming night. I should really head back. It’ll be dark soon. There are no street lights, path lights or even indoor lights to light my way. The only light is fading. The cabin fire probably needs stoking. I need to go paint this moment so I can remember it, paint it by candlelight in a cabin in the woods without electricity. Maybe there will be owl calls or wolf howls to keep me company tonight.

This original mixed media artwork on heavy watercolor paper showcases two of my favorite summer visitors. I once lived in a cabin perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. The kitchen window faced the mountainside, where there was a thick patch of these fireweed flowers in July and August. I’d linger at the sink under the window just to watch the hummingbirds zipping among the flowers, enjoying the nectar.

This original mixed media artwork on heavy watercolor paper showcases my favorite cnidarians. I first noticed these creatures paddling in a bay in San Juan Channel. Not knowing what they were actually called, I christened them pickle jellies. Ghostly pickles, with lines of little rainbow cilia hairs that propel them through the water. Later that same summer on a moonless night I noticed flashes of green in the waves on a pebble beach. I grabbed a bucket and my galoshes, waded out and captured some of those green flashes to investigate further. Bringing my bucket inside, I was astonished to find two Pickle Jellies. I took the bucket back out into the dark night. Touching one of the jellies, it momentarily glowed under the pressure of my finger. OMG! I hadn’t been this excited about a new creature discovery since the Hooded Nudibranch! Rainbows in the daylight, bioluminescence at night: pickle jellies were my new favorite thing!

This original mixed media artwork on heavy watercolor paper showcases some of the many flying and crawling creatures that captured my attention on the first day of spring the year I lived on the side of a mountain on a small off-grid island in the Salish Sea. Going outside for an armload of wood for the stove, I noticed the ground buzzed with living creatures awake from a winters sleep. I brought my paints and paper outside to enjoy the sun and the company, depicting each creature that approached me that first sunny day of the season.
