Update on my post last week about our critically endangered Southern resident orcas: we have some hope for little Scarlet!..NOAA announced yesterday that they are working on a plan to feed starving 4-year old Scarlet (J50) live chinook salmon laced with specific medicines, based on breath samples taken last week. It’s unknown if she will accept it, or if their boat presence will further upset the orca family still grieving the loss of a newborn calf last week. But with so few female orcas left in this population they’re willing to give it a try…The Lummi nation, one of our local tribes, are standing by to catch & deliver appropriate-sized salmon to NOAA with their reef net fishing gear…For complete details search for yesterday’s Seattle Times article “NOAA Plans ‘Outside the Box’ response…”
